Utah Business Experts w/Darin Adams Photos

This week I stepped outside of my "Photography" comfort zone. Again.
I recently did all of the photos and quite a bit of food styling for two different books  being released this year. I was nervous. I spent  over 17 hours taking pictures of peas poking up from under snow, tomatoes kale & lettuce thriving in December, cakes, rolls, bread, waffles and a plethora of other such delicacies made  with pioneer yeast. I gained some critical experience, made two new friends and found out that I wasn't half bad. Maybe half good though.

A few weeks ago a good friend asked me if I could photograph an event for The Utah Business Experts.  I was nervous again. But, I know how you get good at what you love. So off I went into the outer provinces of my comfort zone.

I know  her!!  (Please say this in your head like Will Ferrell did in ELF. Thank you) This is Stephanie Davidson and she is the event planner for The Utah Business Experts. She got a "yes" reply from the happy guy on the right. He would be giving the keynote address.  Maybe you recognize him as Darin Adams the co-host from KSL Studio 5. This made me slightly more nervous than I already was. Slightly.

So we met at the headquarters for Utah Corporate Alliance. Nice building. Full of cushy chairs and bowls of miniature candy bars. I was starting to feel like myself again.

This  is Jennifer Harmon. She heads The Utah Business Experts. She is personable, knowledgable, and SPUNK-Y all wrapped up in a bright-eyed little package. So glad we met.

We heard from Jon Davidson on the 5 Steps to Creative PR. This guy can deliver. It was very informative and fun to listen and learn from him. He complained to me beforehand that he didn't have many photos of himself delivering a speech. I will correct that for you Mr Davidson.....(here's a few)

We then heard from "Mr. Passionate" aka Darin Adams. Passion was in-fact his topic and he was qualified to speak on the subject. I found out one of his passions is getting a good deal. Really, really passionate. I was captivated by his whit, his charm, his charisma and his ability to project himself to the immediate audience and anyone else in a 3 block radius. I haven't smiled this much at someone yelling since I last watched The Music Man. Which reminds me, he also sings. (I recorded him myself but I don't want to be sued). I was mesmerized. I think I drooled on my shirt a little. Here's a handful of the photos I took- they speak for themselves.

Afterwards people lined-up for the opportunity to do a little PR with Mr Adams and of course for some photo ops. This is where I came in. He left his business cards in his car, so guess whose business cards became his? I had to tease him for that. Gee I hope people will flip them over. I'd hate to have them miss out ...on having Darin's info.

The total experience was worth spending the day.

Parting Shot
At my Mother's urging because we both look ridiculous but only ONE of us was trying to be. Ehem.

NEW

So it's been a while. I've been busy. I've neglected my blog, again.  I have been working. Thousands of portraits have been taken. Mostly children and bread and a few vegetables. Yes, I did say bread and vegetables. I was hired this winter to photograph for TWO books in publication The first is all about Winter Gardening from the man who brought you The Forgotten Skills of Self-Sufficiency used by the Mormon Pioneers. The  second is a book/cookbook about baking with pioneer yeast .  It's going to be fabulous. I have seen & tasted much of it's contents. It was a fun adventure for me and a step outside of my comfort zone. I took over 6,000 photos for it. I have learned a thing or two about food styling.  I just saw the prototype for the cover and I smiled a big satisfied smile. These are my first & second ever "featured in a book".  We do hope to keep that trend going in the family. When the publishing date draws a little nearer I will post a link so you can find out how and where to buy.  As a new year begins I look forward to another year of stepping outside of my comfort zone. There are races to be run, books to be read, rooms to paint, creations not yet created, people who need more love and photos that you and I will cherish. Let's celebrate the possibilities together.
1st My NEW WEBSITE:   http://www.wix.com/fourchinagirl/gingersnaps#!
AND a 1st Anniversary Special.
Now through the end of February save 20% off my regular hourly rate. Refer three friends and when they complete their bookings you will receive a FREE one hour photo shoot for you and up to 6 people.

And in honor of Valentines I'd like to pay special homage the writer who lives in my basement and makes the best omelettes around. For the past month he has pretty much kept this house running while holding down the equivalent of 3 jobs. We need to get a photo-shoot scheduled BEFORE your publisher asks for it. In the meantime this one (which I quite love) captured you quite perfectly.

Perfection

I know some of you are waiting. I have about 6 photo shoots to edit & post. I have a thing about doing my best. And, well it goes a bit too far with photography. I have a tremendous amount to learn and I am quite frankly impatient with my learning curve.
I know what I want to do- but can't quite get there. Yet.
It feels too slow. Too frustrating, and oh so limited.
Sigh.
But sometimes, my camera and my brain work together and "poof" Wish Granted.
My niece Emmy is round and robust. She really prefers to be held at all times. She would much rather be snuggled in your arms with her head against your chest. She chews, and chews her hands. Oh, and she drools. For most of her mother's pregnancy we prayed more than usual. And then she was born and we prayed a whole lot more. And after more than a few miracles granted we prayed again, to say "thank you".
She is positively perfect. That is what was going through my head when I did her photo shoot. Perfect. Perfect eyes. Perfect nose, hands and feet. Perfect little tummy. Perfect little heart. I wanted to capture every nuance of her perfect little body. Wish granted. I have an entire post dedicated to her and her two older siblings, and the afternoon we spent together.
For now, here is a Glimpse.

Greenwoods

Loved this photo shoot. I am discovering something about myself. I really, really like photographing children. And something else. There seems to always be at least one child in every family who sizes me up and then challenges me to take their picture. Guess what? These usually turn out to be my favorites.  He or she soon discovers that I am not going to pose or force anyone to smile. I follow them around while they play and pretty soon we have an understanding. Sometimes, I think we even become friends. Really. So here's to new friends young and old.
Thanks Katie & Bud for lending me your charming children.
If you'd like to see if we can become friends at a photo shoot, give me a call @ (801) 492-4775 or use the link on the tab "Contact Me"
